artist statement

"Armed & Relevant" is a whimsically haunting journey into resilience, recovery, and the bravery required to challenge societal expectations. This series invites viewers to reflect on the intricate nature of confronting adversity, serving as visual affirmations to persevere even in the face of significant obstacles. Each artwork encapsulates the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability, revealing how shadows can simultaneously haunt and empower us.

In "Don't Take the Bait," I present a cautionary narrative that encourages both myself and viewers to approach conflicts with wisdom and restraint, steering clear of pitfalls that lead to unnecessary turmoil. During the spring of 2024, while working on this piece amidst the media frenzy surrounding the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, I found myself whispering, "don't do it." Although my advice went unheeded, I chose to name the lure "The Drake" as a nod to our local rap icon.

In "RIP Chicago Rathole," I pay tribute to the mysterious ‘Chicago Rathole’ (thanks to John Oliver), a phenomenon that captured the hearts of locals and sparked deep emotional ties. With its uncertain origins—possibly born from an unfortunate squirrel—it became a symbol of community folklore. As people left tokens—wishing coins, Doritos, and other offerings—they forged connections with this quirky icon, celebrating its endearing charm. Notably, in January 2024, a couple chose this site for their wedding, demonstrating how the rathole evolved beyond its physicality into a vessel of joy.

However, shortly after their celebration, the section of sidewalk was removed, reminding us that all things must eventually come to an end. My painting reflects this bittersweet shift, encapsulating both nostalgia and liberation. While it is heartening to honor shared experiences, it also prompts us to reevaluate our attachments to symbols that may have outlived their significance.

Ultimately, "RIP Rathole" serves as a metaphor for moving forward. It acknowledges the joy once surrounding this phenomenon while embracing the freedom that comes from releasing misguided objects of reverence. It encourages viewers to find strength in change and celebrate new beginnings.

with every brushstroke fierce and bright,

we stand our ground, ready for the fight.

so gaze upon these tales we weave—

in hues of dark where truths believe.

from ashes to might like phoenix flight—

with dynamite ignite hearts so bright.

enlightening shadows into sight;

we're fearless now; we'll own the night.

in our arms, the power thrives—

not whispered doubts or silent cries.

we turn our fears to radiant skies

and rise above where courage flies.

for every soul who's felt the sting

of societal chains and what they bring,

stand your ground and celebrate—

with strength and heart we liberate.
